Durante un’eclissi totale, in cui tutti credono che sia arrivata la fine del mondo, appare la Madonna a Elsa, una ragazza insignificante, in cima alla collina dove da neonata era stata trovata e adottata da Saling. La gente del villaggio inizialmente non le crede, finché Elsa non rivela doti taumaturgiche. Ricchi e poveri si riversano in massa al villaggio isolato e qualche imprenditore inizia a mettersi in affari, mentre alcuni abitanti affittano ai forestieri le proprie misere case. Un regista indipendente cerca di documentare le attività di Elsa e le sue guarigioni; la signora Alba inizia a imbottigliare e vendere l’acqua benedetta da Elsa. Ma un giorno, mentre pregano sulla collina, Elsa e la sua assistente Chayong vengono assalite e violentate da alcuni drogati. Elsa resta incinta e smette di guarire le persone, mentre i devoti pensano a un’immacolata concezione. Cosa succederà quando Elsa rivelerà a tutti che non c’è stato nessun miracolo e che le guarigioni erano solo il frutto della fede e della credulità della gente?

In a country plagued with poverty, sickness, ignorance, guilt and religious superstitions the people desperate and powerless rather are waiting for a miracle to happen than stand and fight for a better life. Himala, a legendary film of Filippino cinema , considered by the most critics as the best Filippino film ever made, is without doubt a masterpiece that impress the viewer in any level. I would need thousands of words to praise the film but i will say just that never before or after was a Filipino movie with a so complex, consisting, powerfull and on the point commentary incorporated to its dialogues and scenes: the number of social issues that Bernal touches in the film is insane for a 2 hours work of art.

…Visually, Bernal and cinematographer Sergio Lobo frame each scene carefully, emphasizing each character as a “product” of this specific space. The use of limited spaces, small rooms and dark tones highlight the oppressing nature of the village and its inhabitants, creating a place of danger, paranoia and fear. Even though “Himala” is still a feature film, the majority of it feels almost like a documentary considering how much room is given to each of these characters and their development. 

“Himala” is an uncomfortable film to watch, a movie which intensifies the feeling of being imprisoned in this small community until its terrifying, but fitting conclusion. Whether you regard the film as a tale about faith and superstition or a drama about the depressing nature of poverty, “Himala” is a story which will surely leave an impact on its viewer.
