Fata/Morgana - Vicente Aranda

un po' fantascienza, un po' giallo, un po' psicologico, è un film indefinibile, e difficile da raccontare, storia d'amore e morte, in una città dove tutti sono partiti, per qualche catastrofe che non sappiamo.

l'opera prima di Vicente Aranda è un film ben strano, quando chi comandava totalmente non era solo il produttore, non è un film di cassetta, piuttosto una prova iniziale per un regista spagnolo che diventerà abbastanza famoso.

Curiosa película que supuso el debut como director en solitario de Vicente Aranda tras su previa colaboración con Román Guvern en “Brillante Porvenir”.
El film, muy deudor de la libertad formal de la nouvelle vague, es un curioso experimento de “arte y ensayo” como misterio criminal en un enrarecido ambiente urbano con sonidos jazz aportados por Antonio Pérez Olea…

…The crux of the film, or the thesis, if you will, lies within the lecture that a professor gives on the nature of the killer/victim relationship, and the idea that individuals are born into the position they take on within the dynamics of the killer/victim relationship. Through a slide show of photographs, which starts out depicting frightened women, the professor describes that these victims were victims because they were born to be victims, their beauty an element of the fact that they are victims. The professor then delves into the murder that happened before, committed by the killer who is presumably going to kill Gim. Aranda brilliantly uses the voyeuristic device of a camera as the only proof of the crime being committed; the body from the former murder has not been found, but there are photographs that graphically depict the murder. It is through this device that the film, by way of the central idea (being that an individual can be born a victim) only applies to the woman as victim, escapes claims of misogyny. Because the viewer is watching the incidents on screen, the film, which itself was shot with a camera; a separating element that very cleverly (and subtly) calls attention to the fact that it is a film that one is watching.

Another interesting point to note is that the film was shot in 1965, but the plot places 1965 somewhere in the past. It is in this method that the audience discovers that what is on screen is an image of the 'future,' subverting the all too typical ideas of a dystopic future evident in much genre film of the same time period.

All in all, the film is a brilliant surprise, very refined and innovating, enigmatic and stimulating. Even if watched while presumed a gialli film the audience would not be disappointed; while the film obviously doesn't have all of the markings of the genre, it's an adventurous film that is exciting nonetheless

…Oui, "Fata Morgana" est une oeuvre pour le moins déconcertante, croisement de plusieurs genres, tout comme "La Mort a pondu un oeuf" de Giulio Questi. On peut reprocher à Aranda d'avoir conclu son histoire de façon abrupte, trop hâtive, et de laisser ainsi le spectateur sur sa faim. Mais on a là un véritable film d'auteur, servi par de bons acteurs, parmi lesquels on reconnaîtra un Alberto Dalbès qui deviendra familier dans l'univers de Jess Franco.

In una città semideserta per l'incombere una misteriosa calamità un professore teorizza che le vittime cercano il loro assassino, una bella modella si sente minacciata e un detective deve sventare un delitto... Stravagante gioco di Aranda sui clichè del thriller contaminato con un pizzico di fantascienza. Messinscena pop stilizzata ed elegante, valida colonna sonora jazz e una splendida Teresa Gimpera, al suo esordio cinematografico.

Thriller a forte componente surreale, ma di un surreale assolutamente alla nostra portata nella vita comune. Chi di noi non ha almeno una volta denunciato la paura con lo sguardo e non è stata in tal modo la naturale calamita per un carnefice? E da lì ecco le premonizioni, ancor peggio le suggestioni e l'incapacità di uscirne una volta che capita il peggio... Ma tutto si conclude in tal guisa o perfino l'ambiente ci mette del suo, quasi come a contagiare questa negatività? Magari c'è anche qualche burattinaio dietro? Tutto può essere...
