The Big White - Mark Mylod

What's left after ``Ulysses' Gaze'' is the impression of a film made by a director so impressed with the gravity and importance of his theme that he wants to weed out any moviegoers seeking interest, grace, humor or involvement. One cannot easily imagine anyone else speaking up at a dinner table where he presides.
It is an old fact about the cinema--known perhaps even to those pioneers who made the ancient footage ``A'' is seeking--that a film does not exist unless there is an audience between the projector and the screen. A director, having chosen to work in a mass medium, has a certain duty to that audience. I do not ask that he make it laugh or cry, or even that he entertain it, but he must at least not insult its good will by giving it so little to repay its patience. What arrogance and self-importance this film reveals.

Elogio degli attori

Miki Manojlovic, Ricardo Darín, Vincent Lindon, Koen De Bouw

Frontier Blues - Babak Jalali

E’ abbastanza diverso rispetto a qualsiasi altro luogo in Iran.
(Babak Jalali)

…First we encounter Hassan, an avid collector of registration plates from old and abandoned cars. He is awkward, unsociable and always accompanied by his donkey. His mother and father both left him at a young age, sending him to live with his uncle Kazem, the owner of a local clothes shop. Thin on wares, he makes do with very little, bartering for the odd fashionable item to add to his modest stock - which is often oversized and ill-fitting for his infrequent customers.
Alam's story is one of desire: to learn English, to marry the daughter of a local Persian family and to leave the steppe for Baku in Azerbaijan. He is an idealist in his hopes and dreams to break free and follow his ambition.
The third is the Minstrel and his entourage. Accompanied by four boys he is driven around the rural areas by a photographer from Tehran who is doing a study of the Turkmen people. During one shoot, the Minstrel recounts his story of lost love. One day a young shepherd with a green car stole his love and drove away, never to be seen again. Some say that they are lost forever in the steppe. Although a romantic, the Minstrel is ultimately a realist and proclaims the impossibility of getting lost in the steppes: "You tell me who gets lost in these steppes for 30 years, in these steppes with that car?"
Jalali has a keen eye for long and still shots of the barren north Iranian landscape and other everyday scenes. We are shown the steppe, the coastline punctuated by old ruins, long and dusty roads, and colourful, ramshackle buildings which all inspire a sense of stillness, creating a beautiful, and at times humorous, portrait of the Turkmen people and Golestan.

De indringer - Frank van Mechelen

protagonista è Koen De Bouw, commissario in "The Memory of a Killer".

I've seen this movie in World Avant Premiere two days ago and it was great!! What else did you expect, with some of the best Belgian actors in it?! The story is built up slowly, but going on you will do some surprising discoveries - nothing is what it seems. In a little village in the Ardennen there are 4 clans/families and they don't like 'intruders' (='indringers') and when Tom (Koen De Bouw) arrives to find out where his daughter is, they're all watching him - the eyes are everywhere. What happened to his daughter? What does Charlotte know about her? How did they meet? All urgent questions that will find an answer eventually, after a hunt in the woods.

The Intruder is a strong Belgian drama. It has an air of mystery, a search for a missing girl – and the case opens up corruption and deceit, cover-up in a small Belgian community in the countryside.

The central character is a doctor who is devoted to his fourteen-year-old daughter whom he is bringing up by himself. She disappears and his world falls apart. Skilful at the hospital, he begins to make mistakes, act violently and spend his time, after being dismissed, searching the railway stations and other centres for his daughter.

The plot is complicated when he meets a young girl at the railway station who reacts to the photo of his daughter. He takes her home and wants her help – but is then arrested for taking home a minor. However, he has a friend in the police force who supports him. When he follows the girl to the village, with the friend of an old pensioner in a caravan, and the love of a teacher with whom he has a relationship, he begins to probe the deceits in the town, behaviour of parents, disappearances of children, sexual abuse – and official cover-up. During the hunting season, the doctor’s life is threatened by the local authorities and he uncovers a conspiracy.

The film is continually interesting, taking the audience into an enclosed community and exploring the universal values and fears and violence when such community turns in on itself…

I saw this film when I was in college in the 1970s. It has vanished completely since then. I think it inspired me to become an "underground filmmaker." I like the style, the scenery, the story, the humor, the depiction of life behind the Iron Curtain--particularly for the Gypsies. I still remember the scene where the one character is throwing feathers off the back of a truck, and the fight scene underneath the feathers. And the "wedding" scene where the "monk" says "Any fish in that river, Tisa?" And where the heroine runs away to the big city and attempts to live by singing on the street. (Is this where she is hitchhiking and gets seduced by a puppet-wielding truck-driver?) Also the use of non-actors--local people--in the film. I don't know if the world presented in this movie is realistic or romanticised, but it was a very good film and it deserves to be seen again today.

…It's a film that takes the viewer who is not a gypsy into a foreign world that is ugly, dangerous, and ignorant, but also shows there's a real community among the gypsies and it's a traditional world where they do not easily let outsiders in. Therefore the value of the film is mostly because it shows us an alien culture rarely seen, keeps things authentic and spicy (even if not nice), and flashes on occasion a wicked black humor. It should be noted the production values are not good and neither is the stiff acting, but that didn't stop me from enjoying such an odd spectacle.

Fotografia: G. Cloquet. Musiche: Brahms, Frank, Devresse.

Delvaux was one of those directors who kept on working in his own creative world, seemingly oblivious to the pressures of the commercial world. He got his start by playing the piano for screenings of silent films in Brussels in 1950, just as the hero does here. Then he did TV documentaries before making his first feature, The Man Who Had his Hair Cut Short. Like Un Soir, Un train that preceded it, Rendez-vous a Bray is very lovely to look at (cinematography by the great Ghislain Cloquet) but it unfolds in a sort of glacial calm that leaves me cold…

An appealing foray into ambiguity that uses ellipsis as a kind of erotic invitation, Rendezvous at Bray largely wins one over because its more modest ambitions are so gracefully realized. Derived from a short story by Julien Gracq -– a writer whose rather specialized terrain seems midway between the Gothic novel and Surrealism -– its boundaries are clearly marked by its cozy range of cultural references and its attractive period atmosphere, both of which allow for fireside reveries more nourishing to the imagination than to any prolonged analysis. This is not to say that the plot isn’t well worked out on its own terms: the story can be read without difficulty as a conventional moral tale both in and between its explanatory absences, with its hero’s professional “purity” and aloofness from commitments steadily undermined, or at least questioned, by the allure of the accoutrements of Jacques’ world –- Anna Karina, Bulle Ogier, and the comfortable furnishings of La Fougeraie implying, no less than the professional and military involvements, a stronger foothold in the world outside…
