…Il prorompere delle pulsioni e dei sensi di colpa,
segnalati dalla flessuosità dei suoni del sassofono sulle carni di Anna (per
altro senza davvero scadere nello stereotipo), è faticosamente incastrato nei
riti sociali, scaricato in giochi (il rugby nella hall di Robert Adam a Syon House) e dialoghi dai
nervi a fior di pelle, squarciato dalle lamiere di un incidente
perversamente liberatorio (anzi, più di uno).

The plot depends on coincidences, timing and the resources available in the
limited Oxford world. But it is also recognizably a work of Pinter in the way
the story is revealed backwards, in scenes that are jigsawed together to make
an emotional continuity instead of a straightforward story line.
…The drama is painstakingly
underplayed, brilliantly acted (except for Sassard's wooden performance), its
stylistic realism is smashing and its dialogue is spitefully provocative. The
humor is in its morbid satirical view of how snobbish and pretentious academia
can be and how foolish older men can get over a younger pretty woman. It's a
dark film, with a jaundiced view of love that might not appeal to
everyone. But its unbridled view of the stifling world of academia is
brilliantly realized and shot, and it holds one's interest throughout because
of its wit, its multilayered complexity and how absorbing it all is…
