Prince of the City (Il principe della città) - Sidney Lumet
la legge, gli amici, la corruzione come non si vede al cinema tutti i giorni, Sidney Lumet al meglio (come succedeva spesso), attori poco conosciuti, ma bravissimi.
a tratti documentaristico, ma assolutamente realistico, senza finzioni.

…"Prince of the City" is a very
good movie and, like some of its characters, it wants to break your heart.
Maybe it will. It is about the ways in which a corrupt modern city makes it
almost impossible for a man to be true to the law, his ideals, and his friends,
all at the same time. The movie has no answers.
Only horrible alternatives.

Uno dei film più corrosivi di Lumet, e probabilmente
fra i migliori della sua carriera. Una superba prova attoriale di Williams,
costretto a reggere per tre ore il confronto con i Grandi attori del genere e
sfidare praticamente se stesso, come il protagonista del film (tutto il film si
regge sulla sua prestazione e sul suo personaggio).

…Lumet was a director who often presented
stories where humanity isn't something that's rewarded by the system that
regulates it. "Prince of the City" visits the same territory as
"12 Angry Men," "Serpico," and "Dog Day Afternoon"
among so many others. These are worlds where certain people have to work
awfully hard to get any sense of the right thing to do and if you happen to be
the wrong person, maybe there's no answer at all. While many subscribe
to the idea that if you can't present a solution you shouldn't complain about a
problem, Lumet clearly did not agree, and did us all a service by pointing at
aspects of the problem we may not have considered, one of them being that
honest cops and dirty cops both have some serious problems trying to work in
the system, and there's always more corruption somewhere. It's interesting
though, that Ciello the dirty cop, seemed to get off a little easier than
Serpico the honest cop. If there's any lesson to be learned here, it's just that
this isn't a system you want to trust with your fate. The stubborn voice of
humanity comes through eventually, thanks to Cappalino and Vincente, but it's
nowhere close to a sure thing in a system built for numbers, that rewards those
who see in black and white, although the fates of so many exist in between
those extremes…

Film che emancipata Lumet dall'obbligo di continuare
a recitare la parte di "regista dell'impegno" per cimentarsi come una
partitura difficile, a spirale come il soggetto medesimo della pellicola, ossia
la discrasia tra i vincoli di appartenenza e di fedeltà e il bisogno di realizzare
se stessi. "Il principe della città" è senz'altro un discorso anche
sulla legalità ma l'opera si presenta, nella sua interna complessità, assai
stratificata e di non facile lettura. Poiché ancora una volta domina il tema
del viaggio dentro la coscienza (e conoscenza) di sé, della scoperta della
propria identità nel momento in cui essa viene messa in discussione dalla
pressione delle circostanze. Se l'atmosfera che accompagna l'intera vicenda, e
il modo in cui è magnificamente rappresentata, è claustrofobica e ansiogena al
limite della panicità, l'intera traiettoria esistenziale (e professionale) del
protagonista è all'insegna della solitudine…

at a man who really wants to redeem himself, but somehow finds that he is going
down a path where he is making everything worse for everyone involved. The
movie’s final scene is a perfect representation of the burden Daniel Ciello
will always be forced to carry. Finally, the film is a terrific showcase of
Sidney Lumet does best and that’s delivering gritty, realistic New York police
dramas. It’s possible that the film’s massive length and lack of big-name stars
prevented this movie from finding the success it deserved when it originally,
but Prince of the City demands rediscovery.
